All About Batteries for BMW Motorcycles

In the world of BMW motorcycles, there's a lot to learn about batteries. For one, there are two basic types: conventional (also called wet) and maintenance-free. However, things only get more complicated from there. Her's everything you need to know.

Conventional or Wet Batteries

This type is relatively inexpensive. Some older models actually require them, too, so be sure to check your owner's and service manuals to figure out whether it's the right kind for your bike.

A wet battery needs regular maintenance to run its best, though. That requires periodically filling it with distilled water and checking its electrolyte levels. It has to be mounted upright, too, or else it'll be prone to leak and fail, and if it does leak, its acidic fluid will almost certainly corrode your ride's paint job. Conventional batteries can incur damage from both vibration and heat as well.

Maintenance-Free Batteries

These come in several varieties.

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) Batteries

This kind can be many different sizes, and it's designed both heat- and vibration-resistant. Its case is also completely sealed, valve-regulated, and usually equipped with terminal bolts made of stainless-steel. That means they won't rust and degrade.

Gel Batteries

This kind forgoes the wet medium for gel, and its advantage is that it won't leak, even in the event of a cracked case. It resists heat and vibration much better than average, too.

Most importantly, a gel battery is a great choice for when you're building a custom BMW motorbike, as it can be mounted at an angle, or even on its side. It can even provide cranking power equivalent to a larger conventional or AGM battery. The one thing to consider if you're thinking about buying one: your bike's charging system may need some minor adjustments.

When to Change a Bike Battery

This is straightforward: if it's three years old or older, or it won't hold a charge. Test yours to determine whether it's in working order and be sure to test your ride's charging system to rule out other causes of it not running right.

Things To Consider Before You Buy a Replacement Motorcycle Battery for Your BMW Online

  • Make sure the one you're considering meets your motorcycle's cold-cranking amp or "CCA" requirement.
  • Be sure you dispose of your old battery according to your area's regulations and laws.
  • Be sure the battery's genuine OEM. BMW Motorrad engineers and builds its batteries and brackets alike guaranteed to fit its motorcycles right from the factory, after all.
