What is a Bowden Cable?

The Bowden cable is a critical part of the clutch and/or throttle on your BMW motorcycle. What it is, though, may not always be apparent.

More specifically, it's the combination of a thin stranded wire that moves (either pushes or pulls) inside of a flexible outer housing -- usually, a spirally wound round or square steel wire encased in a corrosion-resistant plastic sheath. More likely than not, your bike has a pulling cable. This kind is commonly used in motorcycle throttles, shifters, brakes, clutches, and cruise control systems, after all.

When to Replace the Bowden Cable in Your BMW Motorcycle

If yours is sticky, dirty, frayed, worn, or otherwise doesn't seem to be doing its job up to spec, replacement is recommended. Before shopping for one online, however, be sure to narrow your search to the genuine OEM variety. Case in point: BMW manufacturers Bowden cables designed to fit its motorcycles perfectly -- that goes for everything from standard bikes like those in the BMW F 650 line to BMW S 1000 RR sport bikes and BMW R 100 GS adventure bikes. That's more than can be said for some of those on the aftermarket.
