All About BMW Motorrad Brake Drums

If your BMW motorcycle features a drum brake system it's essential to recognize that while it works the same way as a disc brake system, the components involved differ. Put simply, drum brakes slow the rotation of your wheels when brake shoes press onto a cylindrical part -- the drum. Traditional drum brakes have the shoes pressing on the inside, while clasp brakes get their name from the fact that the shoes press on the outside -of the drum -- in effect, clasping it in their grasp.

The Parts of a BMW Motorcycle Drum Brake

We've already discussed the brake drum. In order to stand up to the act of braking, it must be made of a cast iron that's both wear- and heat-resistant. A wheel cylinder operates the brake on the wheel, while two pistons push the shoes against the drum. Hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder pushes the pistons against the shoes. Those brake shoes are typically made from heat-resistant steel. Finally, a backing plate supports and protects the housing from debris while acting as a base for all of the brake components.

How to Spot Bad Brake Drums

Brake drums don't last forever, unfortunately. Signs that yours may be failing include:

  • Strange noises when you brake
  • You notice rust building on the brake parts
  • Your brakes take longer to respond than usual
