BMW Motorcycle Headlights: Everything You Need to Know

Headlights are an important safety feature of BMW motorcycles. It may or may not be obvious, but they both improve visibility in low light and at night, and they inform other drivers (and riders) where and how far away you are. Whether you're shopping for headlight housings and assembly kits or just a replacement headlamp bulb, we've got all the info you need to make the best buying decision possible; check out our mini guide.

What Types There are

There are three, generally. Halogen headlights are one example; they're relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to replace, though you may have to change them relatively frequently. Xenon headlights are another; also called high-intensity discharge or HID headlights, their lamps are much brighter than the average, they put out less heat, and they last longer than usual. However, they can be slightly more expensive, and they may require help from a BMW motorcycle service center when it's time to fix or install one. LED headlights are a third. They're exceptionally energy-efficient, and they have a much longer life. They may be a little costlier to replace, however, and they're a tad less common than other kinds of headlamps.

When to Replace Them

As no headlight is permanent, you'll have to change them eventually -- when they weaken, when the bulbs blow out, or when their electronics die. That's every couple to few years, most often.

What Kind Your BMW Bike Needs

This depends on two things: what it came with and what it's compatible with. Consult your owner's manual about it; it should have all the info you're looking for. When it's time to buy new ones, be sure to order genuine OEM.

Why Buy OEM Headlights for a BMW Motorcycle? Why Not Aftermarket?

They're genuine BMW -- top-quality, and guaranteed to fit and work right the first time. Plus, unlike some aftermarket headlights, they won't void any factory warranty your bike has left.
