All About BMW Motorrad Valve Covers

Valve covers, sometimes called rocker covers, are absolutely important parts of a motorcycle engine. Made of plastic or metal and bolted to the top of the cylinder head, they work with valve cover gaskets. The latter seal the gap between the valve cover and the cylinder head. Together, they prevent moisture infiltration and oil leakage, maintain compression, and reduce the effects of vibrations on the bike chassis.

How Valve Covers Fail

A valve cover is always oil-soaked, however, to help prevent engine overheats and surface oxidation and ensure it doesn't melt, and if it ever cracks or loosens, that all-important oil can leak out. A lack of oil has several consequences. One is excess friction produced between many moving parts that should otherwise be greased up and greased well; this almost invariably wears the parts out, and it can eventually break them. Engine overheats can also result.

  • Dirt and debris caked on the valve cover
  • Oil slicks left behind
